Grammy winning musician The Weeknd — real name Abel Tesfaye — is set to make his feature film debut in a new psychological thriller called “Hurry Up Tomorrow” that will also star Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
The film is actually an extension of Tesfaye’s upcoming album of the same name with a score for the movie that he’s producing alongside Daniel Lopatin.
Trey Edward Shults is directing the film after previously working on the horror film “It Comes at Night” and directing an episode of the HBO series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.” The Weeknd came up with the concept and story for the film with Shults also contributing the screenplay for the upcoming movie.
“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium,” Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson said in a statement to Deadline. “With ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
Of course Tesfaye isn’t new to acting after he helped develop the controversial HBO series “The Idol” where he starred alongside Lily Rose Depp. In the show, Tesfaye portrayed a cult leader and self-help guru who ends up attached to Depp’s character — a pop star struggling to maintain a balance after suffering through a nervous breakdown — and he begins manipulating every facet of her life.
It’s also no secret that Tesfaye is a big fan of horror after he unleashed a nightmarish vision with a couple of different themes for Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights.
Now Tesfaye is bringing a new psychological thriller to coincide with the release of his new album, which is expected to drop sometime in 2025.
