“Terrifier 3” scored a massive opening with the indie horror sequel landing at No. 1 at the box office for its opening weekend…
“Terrifier 3” is officially a smash hit.
The third film in the Art the Clown series from writer and director Damien Leone ended as No. 1 at the box office during the sequel’s opening weekend. “Terrifier 3” took home $18.3 million at the domestic box office, which more than tops the entire box office revenue for “Terrifier 2” with $15.7 million worldwide.
It’s a huge achievement for an ultra-gory, extreme, unrated horror film that showed across 2,514 theaters in the United States.
Meanwhile, a film with a much, much bigger budget and being shown in nearly double the theaters — “Joker: Folie a Deux” — only took home $7.055 million in its second weekend after costing over $200 million to make.
Due to the graphic nature of the film, “Terrifier 3” didn’t receive a huge marketing push or trailers being shown on television constantly. Instead, the horror film relied on word of mouth and a huge buzz in the horror community, especially after the surprising success of “Terrifier 2.”
“Feeling very proud and grateful! No. 1 movie in America,” Leone wrote on Instagram celebrating the news. “I got to see ‘Terrifier 3’ last night in a packed theater in Times Square amongst an audience who had no idea I was there. The energy of the crowd was truly something to behold. I never experienced anything quite like it!
“Huge congratulations once again to my cast and crew. We received every possible reaction from the audience we could’ve hoped for: screams, gasps, laughs and cheers! It’s a wild ride and a fantastic theater going experience “
Leone already teased that he has plans for “Terrifier 4” but he also acknowledged that film couldn’t happen unless “Terrifier 3” found its audience. It’s safe to say with the success of a huge opening weekend and landing No. 1 at the box office that Leone can start storyboarding ideas for the fourth film in his now ultra popular horror franchise.
