It was during the pandemic that director Jang Jae-hyun decided to begin work on his next film with hopes that he could create a genre film that would bring audiences back to the theaters.
At the time, the entire theater industry was under siege due to restrictions and social distancing that effectively shut down the business and for a little while, it appeared the entire global operation might close forever.
As he was writing his script, Jang decided to focus on the act of exhumation — digging up graves and either relocating the remains — and that gave him the inspiration to dive into the past and explore Korea’s difficult history with colonization with Japan.
The sprawling story takes place over several acts as a pair of shamans skilled in exorcism team up with a geomancer and feng shui expert hired to exhume the body of a long dead patriarch, who is still haunting the first born sons of his family.
What they discover buried deep on a mountain overlooking the divide between North and South Korea trudges up far more horror than they ever could have possibly imagined….
