Maika Monroe goes from battling a serial killer in “Longlegs” to a return to the role that made her famous as she prepares to return for the “It Follows” sequel titled “They Follow”…
Maika Monroe has done a lot of work outside of horror but she always seems ready to return to the genre that launched her career after a star making performance in the 2014 film “It Follows” from writer and director David Robert Mitchell.
Now she’ll actually go back to that film again with a new sequel on the way titled “They Follow” and while very few details about the film have been revealed, Monroe is more than ready to return to that role as Jay Height — a young woman being pursued by an evil entity that seeks to kill you unless you pass on the “curse” to somebody else through sexual intercourse.
“They Follow” is expected to get into production sooner rather than later and Monroe teased her anticipation for the sequel after reading the script that Mitchell handed her for the project.
“Genuinely, this script is so good,” Monroe told EW while promoting her new film “Longlegs.” “It’s so good on so many levels. David is just so brilliant. He really is. I’ve said this before in other interviews, but he wouldn’t make a sequel if he didn’t think that he had the best fucking idea for it. He’s just not that type of filmmaker or person.
“It’s so special. It’s still very, I don’t know…unique. There’s just something about it. I’m so excited to step back into that role. I think it’s going to be challenging, but just such a joy.”
The plot in the original “It Follows” film was easy enough to follow yet horrifying and totally different from anything else in horror, which is why the movie became such a cult classic.
Monroe wouldn’t give away any secrets about what Mitchell has in store for the sequel or how she fits into the movie but she’d be shocked if anyone was able to guess what’s planned for this upcoming movie. In similar fashion to her current film “Longlegs,” there will be plenty of fans speculating what to expect but Monroe is betting that the audience will still be surprised once “They Follow” is released.
“I mean, maybe,” Monroe said. “I would be shocked if someone did.”
As of now, Monroe is the only cast member confirmed from “It Follows” to return to the sequel but once production gets underway, there will surely be more news about Mitchell’s plans for the film.
