After making approximately 50 short films but never attending film school, French writer and director Sebastian Vanicek decided to crossover into features with an idea that evolved from trying to understand why people were so terrified of spiders.
To Vanicek, spiders were really harmless creatures that aren’t out to harm anybody yet people remain scared of them. Add to that, Vanicek wanted to create a story that related back to his upbringing in France where he lived in a suburban neighborhood.
According to Vanicek, people living in the suburbs are treated almost like outcasts versus those who populate the larger cities. To him, the suburbs were the perfect place to live because you knew and trusted everybody. You were surrounded by family not just neighbors.
He created a story that injected spiders into the suburban neighborhoods where he grew up because both the people living there and the creatures taking over an apartment building didn’t actually mean any harm yet they ended up at odds with each other.
The story centers around a disaffected and isolated teenager, who just recently lost his mother, and he surrounds himself with creatures that he adores — including a dangerous spider that escapes and soon spawns thousands of offspring that begin crawling around every nook and cranny of his building.
