The first look at “The Substance,” which took home the award for best screenplay at the Cannes film festival, has arrived with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in a new body horror movie…
“Pretty girls should always smile!”
That’s the introduction to the upcoming film “The Substance,” which was a festival favorite in Cannes earlier this year with the body horror flick capturing the best screenplay award.
Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, who also made the criminally underrated film “Revenge” (which is currently streaming on Shudder), the new film stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid.
In “The Substance,” Moore plays an aging Hollywood star who is watching her grip on the industry loosen as she gets older but she undergoes an experimental cloning procedure that she believes will help save her career. Desperate to stay relevant after losing her job on TV, Moore’s character injects herself with a substance called Activator that produces a younger, more vibrant version of herself named Sue as played by Qualley.
The strange drug forces the aging Hollywood star to live in her own body for a week at a time and then a week as Sue but her problems begin to compound after her boss (played by Quaid) prefers Sue and lavishes her with praise and opportunities.
The film received rave reviews at Cannes and Mubi picked up the body horror pic for distribution with the movie expected to land in theaters on Sept. 20.
For now, take a look at the new trailer for “The Substance” and get ready for the film’s release later this year.
