‘Twin Peaks’ co-creator Mark Frost says he had kicked around some ideas for a fourth season with David Lynch but following his death, he has no plans to carry on with the series…
It appears “Twin Peaks” has officially concluded.
The groundbreaking series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost became a cultural phenomenon when it first debuted in 1990 and then the duo revived the show for “Twin Peaks: The Return” in 2017.
While it turns out there had been some early discussions about possibly returning for a fourth installment, Frost says he no longer plans on carrying on anything “Twin Peaks” related following Lynch’s death back in January.
“We had talked a little bit about where a fourth season might go,” Frost told Empire recently. “But with David having left us, it’s hard to imagine doing anything beyond this. It certainly feels like it closed the circle.”
Lynch hadn’t directed anything since “Twin Peaks: The Return” ended its 18 episode run but he still continued creating new music and art. Sadly, his failing health kept him from actually returning to the director’s chair and he effectively retired shortly before his death.
Frost also revealed how he and Lynch actually had differing views on how to end “Twin Peaks: The Return” but now that last episode serves as the series finale.
“Twin Peaks” co-creator Mark Frost is putting the possibility of a Season 4 on ice. The filmmaker said that without late auteur David Lynch, “Twin Peaks” would be a different entity entirely. Lynch died January 16, 2025, at the age of 78 due to complications from emphysema. Prior to his passing, Lynch was in discussion with Frost about potentially revisiting the beloved series.
“Twin Peaks” first premiered on ABC in 1990 and aired for two seasons. Prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me” was released in 1992; in 2017, Lynch and Frost reunited for revival series “Twin Peaks: The Return” on Showtime. Lynch also reprised his acting role as FBI agent Gordon Cole for “The Return.”
“Initially, David and I were in two minds about how to end ‘The Return,'” Frost said. “I felt that Cooper [Kyle McLachlan] going back and rescuing Laura [Palmer], then having the mystery of her death disappear, might be an extraordinary way to bring us back to ground zero.
“But David said, ‘He has to pay a price for what he’s tried to do.’ Sheryl Lee was incredible. This is the moment when the full horror comes back to this poor soul; it’s the price Laura Palmer pays for Cooper’s attempted good deed. That was the end of this story.”
While it appears that there won’t be any more “Twin Peaks” to come, there’s still plenty of the series to enjoy from the past with three seasons of the show as well as “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me,” which served as a prequel movie to the original series as well as books with a couple of those written by Frost himself.
“Twin Peaks” is currently available for streaming through Paramount +.
