It seems like a foregone conclusion that “Scream 8” is going to happen but Kevin Williamson won’t return to write or direct …

With “Scream 7” earning over $151 million at the worldwide box office, it seems like “Scream 8” is inevitable but if the sequel happens it won’t come from original creator Kevin Williamson.

The long road to even make “Scream 7” was filled with controversy after “Scream 5” and “Scream 6” star Melissa Barrera was fired from the project, Jenna Ortega left due to scheduling issues and director Christopher Landon dropped off the film. That’s when Williamson was hired to right the ship along with original series star Neve Campbell, who sat out “Scream 6” over a pay dispute with Spyglass, the studio in charge of the “Scream” franchise.

Williamson directed “Scream 7” and also co-wrote the script with Guy Busick but despite the success of the latest film, he has no plans to return to direct a potential eighth installment.

“Not Scream. No,” Williamson told Hello Sidney about possibly returning for another sequel. “[Returning for ‘Scream 7’] came out of Neve returning. She asked and I came running.”

While Williamson has now written or co-written four different “Scream” movies and directed “Scream 7,” he admits that he’s happy to hand over the reins to somebody new while he moves onto different projects moving forward.

“It’s nice to be part of the ‘Scream’ family,” Williamson said. “That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins.”

Despite the immense success surrounding “Scream 7,” an official sequel hasn’t been ordered yet, although it almost seems certain given the box office returns on the latest film.

“Scream 7” not only brought Campbell back to her iconic role as Sidney Prescott but the film also included Courteney Cox back as Gale Weathers and Matthew Lillard returning to the franchise for the first time since role in the original “Scream” from 1996.

“Scream 7” is still playing in theaters now.
