The location for “True Detective” season 5 has been revealed with plans for the anthology series to return to HBO in 2027…
Work on “True Detective” season 5 is already under way with Issa Lopez returning to craft a new story after her success creating “True Detective: Night Country,” which was nominated for numerous major awards.
While full details about the latest installment in the anthology series are still under wraps, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama series and film, recently revealed the location for the next season after the show has traveled from Louisiana to California to Arkansas and then to Alaska for “Night Country.”
“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” Orsi told Deadline. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with ‘Night Country.’ It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
“True Detective: Night Country” focused on the mysterious deaths of a group of scientists working at a research station in a remote part of Alaska with an investigation headed up by a police chief played by Jodie Foster and an officer portrayed by Kali Reis. The series was a critical and commercial success for HBO and it was the first season of “True Detective” that wasn’t written by original show creator Nic Pizzolatto.
The show was so well received that Lopez signed onto return for the fifth season with Orsi detailing early plans for a writers’ room as the series moves closer to production in the future.
“I’m really excited about it,” Orsi said. “We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
With casting expected to begin in the near future, “True Detective” season 5 is expected to feature three lead characters this time around — two males and one female — with the show tentatively scheduled to debut sometime in 2027.
