Legendary indie studio Troma Entertainment is well known for releasing over the top, low budget ‘B’ movies, which included the 1984 film “The Toxic Avenger.”
The movie became a bit of a cult classic, spawning several sequels and even a cartoon series for TV and talks about a remake or a reboot started 15 years ago, although getting the movie off the ground was much more difficult than initially expected.
Several directors were rumored for the project but it wasn’t until Macon Blair, who was best known for his acting career, got the gig as writer and director.
Rather than a straight up remake, Blair decided on a reboot of sorts, using elements from the original film but also creating his own version of the story. “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage signed onto star in the lead role and production wrapped four years ago but despite a festival release and positive reviews, the movie gestated in limbo without a distributor attached to actually release the film to a wider audience.
It wasn’t until 2025 when a studio finally took on the film with plans for a theatrical release. This time around, the story follows single stepdad Winston Gooze, who is transformed into a mutant hero named Toxie after a freak accident with some chemicals gave him superpowers and a nuclear mop ready to wipe up villains far and wide …
