Hey teachers, leave those kids alone!
Yes, “The Faculty” — the 1998 sci-fi horror film that featured a script from “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson and directed by Robert Rodriguez — is getting a remake.
The updated version of the film is being written by Drew Hancock, who has received rave reviews for his work on the just released film “Companion,” and now he’s taking a stab at a reboot for “The Faculty.”
The original film released in 1998 featured a cast that included Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Shawn Hatosy, Elijah Wood and John Stewart was a hit at the box office earning over $63 million on a $15 million budget.
The film centered around a group of teenagers who begin to suspect something sinister is happening at their Ohio high school when the teachers start acting strangely and soon the phenomenon reaches the student body as well. The rag-tag bunch of misfits ends up discovering that it’s an alien invasion and they’re the only ones capable of stopping this from becoming a widespread infection that could take over the entire world.
Beyond the success of the film in theaters, “The Faculty” has remained a favorite among horror fans and it’s widely regarded as one of the classic horror movies from the 1990s.
There’s no word yet on who is doing to direct “The Faculty” remake, although it’s entirely possible that Hancock potentially steps into that role as well after success on his debut film “Companion” that he took over after Zach Cregger {“Barbarian”) was unable to work on the film but remained on as an executive producer.
Rodriguez is producing the new version of “The Faculty” with BoulderLight — the same company responsible for Cregger’s breakout hit “Barbarian” — producing the movie.
