Scooby gang fans rejoice because “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a return with a revival currently in the works at Hulu with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her famous role…
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a return to television with a new revival sequel in the works at Hulu with original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar in talks to star in the reboot.
A sequel series is currently in discussion with a pilot order almost finalized that would see Gellar return to her role as Buffy Summers and Oscar winning director Chloe Zhao expected to sit behind the camera for the first episode in the series. Zhao is a lifelong “Buffy” fan and the series comes from writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who previously worked on the Peacock series “Poker Face” as well as Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
In addition to the pilot order, Deadline reports that a writers room is currently being assembled, which is a sign that Hulu has high expectations for the series moving forward.
There’s no official word yet if other original cast members from the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series that ran for seven seasons and ended in 2003 would also return but the rumors are swirling that it’s “considered likely” to happen.
Original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator and showrunner Joss Whedon is not involved whatsoever in the followup project. He hasn’t worked in Hollywood since a series of misconduct allegations went public in 2021 and Whedon has largely stayed out of the public spotlight ever since.
Since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” concluded a seven season run between the WB and UPN, there have been numerous pitches to bring the series back to life through potential reboots or re-imaginings but Gellar had largely shut down any chance that she would actually return to reprise her lead role.
That all seemed to change in recent years but especially after Gellar landed a role in “Dexter: Original Sin” — the “Dexter” prequel series that follows the serial killer during his earliest days as he honed his craft and learned to subdue his “Dark Passenger.”
“It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said about her objections to returning for another “Buffy” series.. “But watching ‘Sex and the City’ and seeing ‘Dexter,’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
That maybe is about to become a full-throated yes with Gellar expected to finally reprise her role as Buffy for the first time in over two decades. Her comments are actually what spurred further interest in the “Buffy” reboot and negotiations on her return started back then.
Now, Gellar is closing in on a deal to reprise her role with a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot drawing closer and closer to reality.
