“Squid Game” is returning for season 2 in December but then the show is coming to an end with season 3 expected in 2025…
“Squid Game” — the hugely popular South Korean series that became a smash hit for Netflix — is finally ready to return for season 2 but that also comes with the announcement that the show will come to an end with season 3.
The news was announced on Wednesday along with a short teaser video for “Squid Game” season 2, which is set to drop on Netflix on December 26. The third and final season is then expected to debut sometime in 2025 according to series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
The second season of “Squid Game” arrives more than three years after the show became the most watched series in Netflix history with 2.2 billion hours of watch time during its first 13 weeks of release.
“Squid Game” revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a huge cash prize. After hundreds of players are picked off and killed, only one survivor is left standing — a man named Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) — who escapes with the money but soon discovers that the perilous game is still being played, which forces him to search for answers about the people behind it all.
“Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again,” Hwang wrote about the end game for the series. “Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be brought to you next year.”
Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo will return from the first season of “Squid Game” with new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri and Won Ji-an.
The massive success of “Squid Game” led to Netflix immediately ordering a second season with Hwang now promising to wrap up his story in three total seasons.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” Hwang said. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.”
A full trailer for “Squid Game” season 2 will debut in the near future but for now check out the teaser and get ready for the new episodes to drop on December 26.
