“Scream 8” is officially in development after “Scream 7” earned more than $200 million at the worldwide box office ….

Does Ghostface ever really die?
With “Scream 7” earning more than $200 million at the worldwide box office, it should be no surprise whatsoever that “Scream 8” is officially in development at Spyglass and Paramount.
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, who just recently scripted the pilot for the scrapped “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot as well past work on “Poker Face,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Suits,” have been tapped to write the latest sequel in the long running franchise.
“Scream 7” was directed and co-written by original “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson, who returned alongside series star Neve Campbell after she sat out “Scream 6.” The film opened to over $97 million at the box office and became the first film in the franchise to cross the $200 million mark, which made another sequel almost guaranteed.
But Williamson said after he returned for “Scream 7” that he wasn’t likely returning for “Scream 8” with plans to hand off the next sequel to somebody new instead.
“It’s nice to be part of the ‘Scream’ family,” Williamson said. “That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins.”
Obviously with new writers in place, the development for “Scream 8” can begin but there’s no word yet on where the Zuckerman sisters plan to take the plot much less who might or might not return for the latest sequel. The same goes for a potential director for the latest “Scream’ film.
“Scream 7” saw Campbell reprise her role as Sidney Prescott along with Courteney Cox returning as Gale Weathers with Matthew Lillard also making his return to the franchise for the first time since the original “Scream” in 1997. New cast members included Isabel May, Joel McHale, Anna Camp, Ethan Embry and McKenna Grace.
While reviews for “Scream 7” weren’t overly positive, the film crushed it at the box office and now and eighth film in the horror franchise is already in the works.
