“Scream 7” production is officially underway.
The highly anticipated sequel that features the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott has started filming with director Kevin Williamson gushing about his experience after the first day on set. Williamson took over as director after Christopher Landon dropped off the project when “Scream 5” and “Scream 6” star Melissa Barrera was fired from the film over social media posts she made about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine while Jenna Ortega also dropped out due to conflicts filming her Netflix series “Wednesday.”
Williamson eventually signed onto return to the franchise he started after writing the original “Scream” as well as “Scream 2” and “Scream 4” but this time he’s going behind the camera as director with Guy Busick returning to pen the script for “Scream 7” after he previously worked on both “Scream 5” and “Scream 6.”
“I’m not supposed to post about Scream and I hope Spy Glass Media and Paramount Pictures will forgive me but when you have one of the best days of your life it’s really hard to keep it to yourself,” Williamson wrote on Instagram. “What an extraordinary day I had working with an amazing and talented cast and crew.
“They brought their “A” game and had my back every step of the way. I’m so very grateful for this opportunity and to Wes Craven who was on my mind through it all. The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow!”
In addition to Campbell returning for “Scream 7” after sitting out “Scream 6” due to a financial dispute with the studio, Courteney Cox is also coming back as Gale Weathers and Mason Gooding is set to reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin after originating that part in “Scream 5” and also appearing in “Scream 6.”
First timers joining the “Scream” family include Isabel May, who is set to play Sidney’s daughter in the horror sequel, and she’s joined by Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, McKenna Grace, Sam Rechner and Anna Camp.
There have also been rumors that Patrick Dempsey may return to play Sidney’s husband Mark Kincaid after he first appeared in “Scream 3” but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
While there were a lot of ill feelings about the cancellation of “Scream 7” after Barrera’s firing and then moving forward with a new vision for the film, Landon — who dropped off the project after previously helming horror comedies like “Happy Death Day” — sent a nice message to Williamson after production got started.
“Congrats Kevin! I’m so excited to see the amazing places you take this,” Landon wrote.
There’s no word yet on how long production will last on “Scream 7” but the film is slated for release in theaters on February 27, 2026.
