Genre favorite Samara Weaving — who has starred in films such as “Ready or Not” and “Scream VI” — returns to horror for her next film titled “Azrael” with a release date now set.
IFC Films and Shudder have acquired the North American rights to the film with “Azrael” set for release into theaters on September 27. The film will then stream on Shudder later in the year.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
“Azrael takes place in a world in which no one speaks, watching as a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness — but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival.”
The film was written by Simon Barrett, who previously penned films such as “You’re Next” “The Guest” and “Blair Witch,” which were all movies he worked on with frequent collaborator Adam Wingard. This time around, Barrett’s script is directed by E.L. Katz, who previously worked on TV series such as “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Channel Zero.”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have ‘Azrael’ released by our good friends at Shudder/IFC,” Katz said in a statement to Deadline. “Their support of wild, uncompromising genre films is unparalleled. We are so excited to invite all horror fans along for this mysterious, gruesome, hellish, Samara Weaving ass kicking marathon.”
“Azrael” originally debuted at SXSW in 2024 but now finally makes its theatrical debut in September before eventually streaming on Shudder.
