In 2017, French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat unleashed her debut film titled “Revenge” — a brutal film centered around sexual assault and vengeance — and that movie received a ton of critical acclaim.
Despite the attention she received, Fargeat resisted just accepting whatever offers were being thrown at her and instead she decided to wait to craft her next story, which didn’t come until five years later.
After turning 40, Fargeat started experiencing feelings of dread about her worth and acceptance as she started getting older, especially for a woman in Hollywood.
That led to her crafting a script centered around a famous star named Elizabeth Sparkle, who gets pushed out of her most famous role because the network decides to go after someone much younger and she’s effectively discarded without a second thought.
A despondent Elizabeth turns to a mysterious substance that literally births a younger, more vibrant version of herself with the understanding that the two halves can only survive if they swap places every seven days. But the attention that Elizabeth’s other half receives makes it hard for her to ever go back to her old life again…
