In our special 200th episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to sharpen our stakes, go get the amulet and prove the Wolfman’s got nards as we review the 1987 classic “The Monster Squad” plus Dracula himself Duncan Regehr joins us for a special interview….
Inspired by films such as “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” and the idea to pit The Little Rascals against the Universal Monsters, writer and director Fred Dekker came up with an idea for a story that would feature kids facing off with horror icons like Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster.
After telling college pal Shane Black about the story, he immediately ran with the idea and started hammering away on a script that ended up being a behemoth by the time he was finished.
Soon after, Dekker finished working on his film “Night of the Creeps” and Black sold his first script called “Lethal Weapon,” the two of them moved full steam ahead on their shared project after some major editing got the screenplay down to a little over 100 pages.
With help from famed director Peter Hyams and creature creations done by Stan Winston’s studio, Dekker and Black crafted a modern take on the creatures of the night all teaming up together to take over the world and the only ones brave enough to face them are the 12-year-old kids who still believe in monsters…
