A vacation with his family inspired Danish director Christian Tafdrup to write what would become his third feature film.
It was while he was traveling in Italy that Tafdrup’s family befriended some strangers from the Netherlands, who invited them to come visit after their vacations were over.
Tafdrup didn’t accept the invitation but he immediately started imagining a worst case scenario of what could have happened if they took the trip. Production on the film wrapped in early 2021 with a release in almost exactly one year later with Tafdrup’s disturbing story receiving mostly positive reviews.
Barely a year later, Blumhouse announced plans to remake the film with director James Watkins attached to direct and James McAvoy starring in the lead role. While Tafdrup’s film was mostly in English, the chance to remake his film with an American twist was too enticing to pass on.
The story was largely the same but this time the lead couple were two Americans named Ben and Louise traveling with their daughter Agnes when they meet Patty and Ciara along with their mute son Ant.
A few days spent together leads to a friendly invitation from Patty and Ciara to come visit their secluded farmhouse and the Americans decide to accept but soon find out there’s something much more sinister happening during this getaway.
