Steven Soderbergh has made films across numerous genres and he’s an Oscar winning director but he’s never one to shy away from taking chances with his movies.
For his latest film, Soderbergh was inspired by a creepy event that happened at his own home after he and his wife moved into a house where the previous owner died under mysterious circumstances with a neighbor later telling them that the woman who lived there was killed by her own daughter.
Soderbergh was fascinated by the possibility of his home being haunted but he never personally experienced anything. It wasn’t until a friend was housesitting for him and she saw a woman cross the hall from the bathroom to a bedroom and she called out to Soderbergh’s wife but she wasn’t actually home.
Rather than obsessing over the possible haunting, Soderbergh wondered what it must be like for the woman who previously lived there who now exists as a ghost.
That was all he needed to write a 10-page treatment with an idea that told a haunted house story from the point of view of the ghost. He eventually teamed up with famed screenwriter David Koepp to flesh out the script and Soderbergh was ready to make his first real horror film…
