In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to skip the reservations and just order in as we review the 2025 romantic comedy horror film “Heart Eyes”…
Almost like a horror “super friends” episode, director Josh Ruben, who is best known for his work on indie darlings such as “Scare Me” and “Werewolves Within,” decided to take his first stab at a major studio film after teaming up with a writing team that included Christopher Landon — the mind behind films such as “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky” — and his frequent collaborator Michael Kennedy after they crafted a script that was one part slasher and one part romantic comedy.
As a devout fan of both genres, Ruben knew he had something special to work with but he had to find the perfect balance between films he loved like “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Pretty Woman” but then merging that with one of his all-time favorite horror movies “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives.”
A huge part of that endeavor required the perfect cast and luckily he found that after Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt took on the lead roles in the movie.
The story follows a series of brutal murders that take place on Valentine’s Day with a masked killer known as HEK — the Heart Eyes Killer — who only targets couples in random cities across the United States but this time the killer has landed in Seattle and a pair of young advertising gurus end up together on that fateful night with Cupid’s arrow pointed directly at them….
