As he was finishing up post production on his film “Luz,” writer and director Tilman Singer was watching a BBC documentary on the phenomenon of brood parasitism, which basically means when certain animals leave their offspring with another species to raise.
Singer was fascinated after witnessing the host parents nurturing and raising a baby cuckoo chick after their own had died. From that striking image, Singer knew he had an idea that he would eventually develop into a script that projected brood parasitism onto humans.
The film originally started coming together during the global pandemic with an entirely different cast outside of “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer, who was attached to the project from the very beginning.
The lead role was originally going to be played by John Malkovich but delays in production forced him to leave the film and that’s when Singer met with British actor Dan Stevens, who came into their initial meeting and spoke to him in perfect German after he recently filmed a movie that required him to speak the language fluently. Singer was hooked and he had his primary cast set for filming.
The movie centers around a 17-year-old girl named Gretchen, who is forced to go live with her father and new family after her mother passes away and they end up living in a remote resort in Germany where odd and offputting is very much the new normal….
