“Nosferatu” is officially a hit after Robert Eggers’ latest film scored a massive opening weekend during the Christmas holiday…
It turns out audiences really did succumb to the darkness when it came to “Nosferatu.”
The latest film from Robert Eggers opened with a massive haul at the box office with “Nosferatu” earning $40.8 million since opening on Christmas day with $21.6 million just during the traditional opening weekend. That puts “Nosferatu” right alongside films such as “Civil War,” “Longlegs” and “Terrifier 3” for the biggest opening from a speciality studio in 2024.
Focus Features produced “Nosferatu” on a $50 million budget so the film has nearly already earned back what it cost to make.
“Nosferatu” also overtakes the No. 1 spot for a Christmas day launch along with a weekend haul for any film from a specialty studio, surpassing Robert Rodriguez’s high school invasion thriller “The Faculty,” which opened with $16 million earned during the holiday weekend back in 1998.
According to Variety, estimates for “Nosferatu” were around $25 million and the opening weekend actually smashed those expectations with no signs of slowing down heading into the New Year.
It’s a huge win for Focus Features and Eggers, who long dreamed about remaking “Nosferatu” ever since he saw the original 1922 silent film when he was a child. Eggers finally got his chance to make “Nosferatu” and the response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially now with the first returns from the box office.
