Neve Campbell is getting ready to shoot “Scream VII” later this year and she revealed the script for the latest sequel puts the focus back on her character Sidney Prescott…
“Scream VII” goes back to its roots with the story centering around famed final girl Sidney Prescott.
That’s according to Neve Campbell, who couldn’t reveal too many secrets about the upcoming sequel, but she did confirm the story centers around her character again, which wasn’t the case for the past two films in the franchise. While Campbell did appear in “Scream V,” she was effectively a supporting character for much of the movie as the story focused more on Samantha Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), who was revealed to be Billy Loomis’ daughter.
“We are going to follow Sidney,” Campbell told ET when talking about ‘Scream VII’ “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.”
Campbell compared her return for “Scream 7” to what Jamie Lee Curtis did when she went back for the “Halloween” reboot in 2018.
While plot details haven’t been revealed yet, original “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson is returning to direct the latest sequel after he last wrote “Scream 4” back in 2011. Williamson’s involvement was a big part of Campbell’s decision to return to the franchise after she sat out “Scream VI” over contractual disputes about the money she was earning for the film.
Campbell praised the studio for listening to her concerns and eventually realizing her value to the franchise, which led to the seventh film getting the green light to go into production.
“I’m super grateful that they came around on it. [Scream VI] just didn’t feel right,” Campbell said. “I couldn’t after this many decades of carrying a franchise, to feel undervalued and underpaid and to know that it wouldn’t have happened to a man in that way. It just wouldn’t make sense for me to walk on that set. So, I’m glad I stood up for myself.”
Campbell never lost her love for the “Scream” films even if she didn’t appear in the fifth sequel but she’s certainly happen to be coming back for No. 7.
“I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades,” Campbell said.
“The fandom is nuts, they are incredible and very passionate about these films. I’m excited to give them a new one!”
Campbell said she hopes to receive a final script for the film soon with production on “Scream VII” expected to start in December.
There’s no word yet on additional cast members for the sequel and there’s been no rumors about legacy cast members from past “Scream” films returning for the seventh movie in the franchise. It’s possible that Courteney Cox reprises her role as Gale Weathers — she’s the only cast member to appear in all six previous “Scream” films — and it’s possible that Patrick Dempsey could also come back after he appeared in “Scream 3” but it was later confirmed that he married Sidney (offscreen) and the couple had children together.
While those casting decisions remain a mystery, what we know for certain is Campbell is coming back to lead the film as Sidney Prescott as she prepares for another showdown with Ghostface.
