Matthew Lillard is officially returning for a role in “Scream 7” but how is he coming back? That remains to be seen…
It’s a scream, baby!
Matthew Lillard — who portrayed Stu Macher, one of the original killers in the first “Scream” film — is returning to the franchise for a role in “Scream 7.”
Lillard teased his return on Instagram while writing out one of his most famous lines from the original film after Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott taunted him that she called the police on him and his cohort Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich).
“My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!”
There’s no word yet on how exactly Lillard is coming back for “Scream 7,” although there’s been speculation for years that his character didn’t actually die in the original “Scream.” Stu met his fate after chasing Sidney through his parents’ house but she got the drop on him — literally — after smashing a TV down on his head. Despite what seemed like a definitive ending, Lillard has always kept the door open on a potential return with fans effectively frothing at the mouth for him to come back, especially after Ulrich found a way back after it was revealed that he was Sam Carpenter’s (Melissa Barrera) biological father.
Lillard’s return certainly amps up the anticipation for this latest sequel, which also features Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott after sitting out the sixth film in the series over a salary dispute with the studio. This time around, Campbell reached a deal and the new film is expected to be a Sidney focused story with original “Scream” screenwriter Kevin Williamson directing the sequel.
The script comes from Guy Busick, who also wrote “Scream V” and “Scream VI.”
The rest of the cast includes Courteney Cox reprising her role as Gale Weathers, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown returning as twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin as well as new cast members Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.
“Scream 7” is currently filming in Atlanta with the movie set for release on February 27, 2026.
