In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to tighten our space suits and make sure we don’t taunt a space cobra as we review the 2012 “Alien” prequel titled “Prometheus”…
Talks about a fifth sequel in the “Alien” franchise date back as far as 2002 when director Ridley Scott expressed interest in returning to the franchise he helped launch with his iconic original film from 1979.
Discussions sputtered and eventually failed when “Alien vs. Predator” became the focus with that movie released in 2004. Several years later, Scott came back on board with plans to direct a prequel to the original “Alien” where he planned to answer several mysteries from the original including the “space jockey” — the extraterrestrial creature found with its chest burst open from the inside out — and he worked with writer Jon Spaihts to develop a script.
The original title was “Alien Zero” and Spaihts’ script featured many of the recognizable pieces from the “Alien” universe including the facehuggers and xenomorphs seen in all the previous films.
But a decision was made to take a deeper dive into the mythology so “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof was hired to rework the script and he engaged in a major overhaul that kept some elements from Spaihts’ script including the inclusion of an android named David but he focused much more on a group of scientists seeking answers for the creation of the human species that didn’t necessarily tie directly back to the original “Alien.”
The story set decades before the first film, a group of scientists, soldiers and pilots land on a remote planet trying to find humanity’s creators but what they actually discover is far more frightening….
