Kevin Smith reveals that he’s working on a horror film that he hopes to pitch to old friends Ben Affleck and Matt Damon through their new production company Artist Equity…
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has often talked about his passion for making movies with his friends but now he might be teaming up with two of his oldest pals to produce a future project.
The 54-year-old New Jersey native recently discussed how Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have teamed up to launch their own production company called Artist Equity, which already produced the Amazon Prime Video film “Air” and the beloved Dunkin Donuts commercial that ran during the Super Bowl.
Smith revealed that he spoke to Affleck last year and the Oscar winning writer invited him to bring his movies over to Artist Equity.
While Smith admitted that most of the stuff he’s written recently wouldn’t be something he would take to Affleck and Damon, that might change with the latest script he’s producing.
“There’s something that I started writing recently that I love that’s, like, outside of my wheelhouse,” Smith told The New York Post. “I grew up in the ’70s, and so movies about Satanism as a young Catholic, that’s my thing. God, that would terrify me to death when I was a kid. The ultimate evil.
“So I’m writing this movie about a satanic cult and it’s grown up enough where I honestly feel like when I’m done, I am going to bring it into the boys to be like, ‘I never do this.’ When I call them up, I’m like, come be in my movie. That’s, like, enough. But I think this is an Artists Equity worthy movie. It’s like my version of ‘Rosemary’s Baby.’”
Smith may best be known for his work on comedies such as “Clerks,” “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy,” but he’s no stranger to the horror genre.
In 2011, Smith released “Red State” — a horror film loosely inspired by the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church — and then in 2014 he dropped “Tusk” — a movie about a podcaster played by Justin Long, who ends up being kidnapped and transformed into a human walrus.
Smith has also teased another horror film called “Moose Jaws” that is effectively his remake of “Jaws” — one of his all time favorite movies that constantly gets referenced in his own work — except this film takes place in Canada and the killer creature is a moose.
There’s no telling where Smith might go with his version of a “Rosemary’s Baby” film but getting Affleck and Damon involved is definitely an intriguing idea.
