There’s a new Jason Voorhees in town.
As part of a planned assault across TV, film, games and more, an updated and redesigned version of the legendary slasher has been unveiled by Horror Inc. Designed in part by Greg Nicotero — the iconic special effects master and longtime executive producer on “The Walking Dead” — the updated Jason takes elements from the past with hopes that this new version also carries the franchise into the future (via Adweek)
The first project coming soon is the prequel series “Crystal Lake” at Peacock with Linda Cardellini starring as Pamela Voorhees but there are plans for a whole lot more Jason in the coming years with this new version of the character appearing in “new movies, gaming, immersive experiences, collectibles, and more.”
“Jason has not only earned his spot within horror, but he has significantly shaped the medium itself and the ways in which audiences interact with the villains that have shaped their nightmares,” Horror, Inc. executive vice president Robbie Barsamian said in a statement
“We know fans are eager for more Jason stories and experiences. And—as we celebrate 45 years of his iconic history—we’re excited to show him off in this new era.”
Of course, Jason Voorhees endured a lot of various redesigns over the years after the first real version of the character showed up in “Friday the 13th Part 2.” In that film, Jason wasn’t exactly a hulking giant but rather just a normal sized human being wearing overalls and a burlap sack over his face.
It wasn’t until “Friday the 13th Part 3” that Jason received his iconic hockey mask, which became synonymous with the character in every subsequent film.
Now this new version is serving as the standard Jason Voorhees for future films and TV projects with plans for a whole new “Friday the 13th” universe starting with the new TV series already ordered at Peacock.
