James Wan might be returning to the sea as the “Aquaman” director is in talks to helm “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” reboot…
James Wan knows a thing or two about shooting underwater movies and horror so it seems like he’s the perfect fit to direct the upcoming reboot for “The Creature from the Black Lagoon.”
The famed writer and director behind two “Aquaman” movies including the original that earned more than $1 billion at the box office along with numerous horror franchises such as “The Conjouring,” ‘Insidious” and “Saw” is in early talks to helm the remake from Universal Studios.
The original film from 1954 centered around a strange prehistoric beast that lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle with a group of scientists trying to capture the creature and bring it back to civilization for study.
Universal has been developing several features surrounding the iconic “Universal Monsters,” which included “The Invisible Man” written and directed by Wan’s longtime friend and frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell. Right now, Whannell is preparing for the release of “Wolf Man” — another Universal reboot — that he’s also writing and directing with Emmy winner Julia Garner starring in the film.
Wan teased his involvement with the project on Instagram on Monday.
“Been methodically contemplating my next DIRECTING gig, maybe it’s in the Black Lagoon?” Wan wrote.
Landing Wan as a director would be a huge get for Universal for a project as coveted as “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” remake, which has been in development for some time now.
Assuming a deal gets brokered, Wan would direct a horror film for the first time since 2021’s “Malignant” and it would also be his first directorial gig since merging his production company Atomic Monster with Blumhouse Pictures.
