In 1978, a “documentary” film called “Faces of Death” was released as a pathologist presented disturbing clips showing gruesome deaths including an electrocution, death by firing squad and even animals being tortured.
The controversial film was banned in many countries and it was later revealed that many of the most disturbing scenes were faked.
But Legendary eventually acquired the rights to “Faces of Death” and a talent agent reached out to his client Daniel Goldhaber to ask if he might be interested in rebooting the film.
He hadn’t seen the original but after watching it, Goldhaber immediately recognized many of the most disturbing moments because he had seen them online before.
Goldhaber teamed up with past collaborator Isa Mazzei to pen the script and they had a unique take on getting back into that world, especially now as creators go to extreme lengths to make viral videos.
But the journey getting the film made was anything but easy as they dealt with censorship issues, a studio backing out of the project and the premiere being cancelled just days before it was supposed to debut.
The film eventually got backing and the years long journey for a release was finally realized. In this version of the story, a moderator for a popular video app, is convinced that she’s been finding clips from real murders being carried out and posted online and she’s determined to find answers ….
