Oscar nominee Austin Butler is set to take over the role as Patrick Bateman in director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming remake of “American Psycho”…
There’s a new Patrick Bateman in town and his name is Austin Butler.
The Academy Award nominated actor best known for his roles in “Elvis” as well as an ominous turn in “Dune: Part Two” as well as a memorable appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is set to take on the starring role in director Luca Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” remake.
Butler has become one of the most talked about leading men since his star-making turn in “Elvis” with the actor also rumored for a potential role in Michael Mann’s upcoming sequel “Heat 2.”
The upcoming film isn’t a remake of the 2000 “American Psycho” movie starring Christian Bale but rather a new adaptation of the original novel by author Bret Easton Ellis with a script from Scott Z. Burns.
The cult classic film from 2000 starred Bale as yuppie socialite Patrick Bateman, who leads a materialistic lifestyle by day and then satiates his murderous thirst at night offing women, homeless people and just about everyone in between. In the film, Bateman’s mask of sanity starts to slip as his blood rage seeps into every corner of his life, culminating in a confession that gets laughed off by his lawyer when he realizes that rich people really can get away with anything … including murder.
The film stays relatively close to the themes from the original book but it remains to be seen what Gaudagnino intends to do with his version of the story.
The Italian director is one of the busiest men in Hollywood lately with two of his recent films getting award attention including “Challengers” and “Queer” both receiving nominations at the Golden Globes with potential Oscar buzz for both films as well.
There’s no word yet when production on “American Psycho” might begin but the hunt for a new Patrick Bateman is over with Butler taking on the role.
