Zach Cregger says his upcoming “Resident Evil” reboot is anything like his two most recent films “Barbarian” and “Weapons”…
Over the past few years, Zach Cregger has become one of the most sought after writers and directors in horror after his debut film “Barbarian” became a surprise hit with a bidding war ensuing between studios to land his second feature “Weapons.”
Now his sophomore effort is far exceeding expectations at the box office so it’s safe to say Cregger is setting himself up for long term success but his next project won’t be anything like his previous two movies.
Cregger is preparing for production on his “Resident Evil” reboot — a remake of the classic video game series but with much different plans for this movie than anything he’s done before. He previously teased that he doesn’t plan on just retelling the same story from the games because that’s already been done so instead he’s crafting his own version set in the “Resident Evil” universe — and he doesn’t expect that film to share much DNA with “Barbarian” or “Weapons.”
“It’s gonna be not at all like ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons,'” Cregger told The Ringer. “It’s going to be a rock ’em, sock ’em… it’s for me to play. And turn my brain off and just make an… ‘Evil Dead 2’… get crazy with the camera. Austin Abrams is gonna be my guy. It’s a weird, fun, wild story.”
Of course, Abrams just starred in “Weapons” and now he’s taking on an even bigger role in the “Resident Evil” reboot.
Cregger has spoken numerous times about his love for the “Resident Evil” games so he’s taking this project very seriously but it is definitely going to be a departure compared to his first two films.
“This movie follows a person from point A to point B,” Cregger said. “It’s like a real time journey, where you just go deeper and deeper into the depths of Hell. And it’s really a love letter to the games.
“Because I love those games. This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I’m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.”
It’s safe to assume with the success of “Weapons,” that whatever Cregger does next is going to get a lot of attention and with the popularity surrounding the “Resident Evil” games this could be another smash hit for the director.
Cregger’s “Resident Evil” is slated to land in theaters on September 18, 2026.
