“Barbarian” director Zach Cregger has his next assignment as he’s being tasked with rebooting the “Resident Evil” film franchise, which is based on the popular video game series that first launched in 1996.

Cregger is set to write and direct the new “Resident Evil” film with Constantin Film — the same studio that has held the rights to the horror franchise since the 1990s is producing — and Shay Hatten, who previously worked on “John Wick: Chapter 4” and Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” is co-writing the script.

The “Resident Evil” film franchise has spawned seven total movies including six starring Milla Jovovich. Like most horror franchises that go on for that many films, there have been a few hits and misses along the way but “Resident Evil” continues making money, which means more movies are definitely coming.

But Cregger getting involved after the success he had with “Barbarian” and the buzz surrounding his next film titled “Weapons” — that stars Josh Brolin and Julia Garner among others — has studios entering a bidding war to land the rights to the next “Resident Evil” movie.

The Hollywood Reporter claims at least four studios are battling for the rights including Warner Bros. and Netflix.

“Weapons” is being distributed by Warner Bros. and the studio is reportedly doing everything possible to keep Cregger in the family for his next project, which is now “Resident Evil.”

While the “Resident Evil” film franchise went in numerous directions across those seven films, Cregger’s take is reportedly more rooted in the original horror of the video games, which centered around the Umbrella Corporation, an international pharmaceutical company that secretly develops mutagenic viruses to further their “bio-organic weapons” and the company’s viruses that can transform humans into mindless zombies.

With Cregger on board, the hype is already building around the next “Resident Evil” film but first he’ll release “Weapons” with the film slated to debut on January 16, 2026.
