“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto says he’s got an idea in mind for another story involving Rust Cohle and Marty Hart with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson “open” to returning to those roles…
“True Detective” was always pitched as an anthology but fans of the show have long clamored for a return to the first season where Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson portrayed Louisiana State Police Detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart as they investigated an occult murder that ultimately spanned several different timelines.
Original series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who is currently not involved with the franchise he launched with HBO, admits that he’s actually got an idea in mind to bring back Rust and Marty for another case and the actors behind the roles would be interested in reprising those parts if a revival was possible. The first season of “True Detective” was a massive success for HBO with the show receiving numerous Emmy nominations including nods for both McConaughey and Harrelson in the lead roles.
“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolatto told the ‘Nothing Left Unsaid’ podcast. “But no, there is pressure, but I don’t really feel or respond to pressure that way. I get pressure [from] myself and beyond that it doesn’t exist so much for me and pressure tends to more revolve around, am I discharging my duty correctly for me?”
Pizzolatto said that McConaughey and Harrelson are “open” to returning to those roles but he didn’t want to reveal any plot details because he knows exactly what would happen.
“If I said something on your show, there would be like five spec scripts going around Hollywood,” Pizzolatto said. “No, I mean, it’s character-based again, that’s all, but it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, ‘Oh, I had that in my head,’ and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
Pizzolatto added that he wouldn’t necessarily feel beholden to continuing the storyline from the original season where Rust and Marty investigated a ritualistic, occult murder that was actually attached to a couple of very prominent families in power in Louisiana. The original investigation ended with the suspects being killed but then years later Rust discovers that they didn’t actually catch everybody involved and he begins digging into the sprawling network of people involved in covering up these murders that stretch back decades.
While McConaughey and Harrelson have never returned to “True Detective,” fans of that first season have long wanted more and the series has continued to mention them with a brief nod in the third season and then the latest installment “True Detective: Night Country” — which Pizzolatto had no involvement with — actually went as far as using Rust’s father as a character and then mentioning numerous ties back to the first season of the show.
“True Detective” is slated to return for another season with Issa Lopez returning to the franchise after making “Night Country” but now Pizzolatto has definitely gotten people to pay attention to a possible reunion for another story involving Rust and Marty.
Will it ever happen? We’ll all have to wait and see!
