Horror is well represented at the 2025 Academy Awards with “The Substance” landing five total nominations while “Nosferatu” ended up with four nominations ahead of the ceremony in March…
The Academy Awards rarely recognize horror films during the annual celebration but that definitely changed in 2025.
“The Substance” and “Nosferatu” scored multiple nominations after a very successful year for both films, which followed Demi Moore taking home the first major award of her career after she won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical at the 2025 Golden Globes.
While there was expectations that “The Substance” would score several nominations at the Oscars, there’s never a guarantee it actually happens but the voting members celebrated the body-horror film with five total nominations with the Mubi produced film getting nods across most major categories.
At the top of the list, “The Substance” received a nomination for Best Picture, which is an extreme rarity for a horror film. Moore continued to get recognized for her work in the film after receiving a nomination for Best Actress, although her co-star Margaret Qualley got shut out of the Best Supporting Actress category.
Coralie Fargeat also received a nomination for Best Director for “The Substance” and she’s the only woman to earn that honor at the 2025 awards show.
“The Substance” also a scored a nomination for Best Screenplay for Fargeat as well after the film earned that same award at the Cannes Film Festival, which was the first sign that this movie could break through the glass barrier that stops most major horror films. The film was also nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars.
Meanwhile, “Nosferatu” missed out on most of the major categories but the Robert Eggers’ gothic horror film received a lot of love in the technical categories. The film earned four total nominations including a nod for Jarin Blaschke for Best Cinematography as well as nominations for Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design and Production Design.
The Oscar ceremony is scheduled to happen on March 2 from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, starting at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET with Conan O’Brien hosting. The show airs live on ABC and Hulu.
