2008’s “The Strangers” is one of the most beloved and universally praised horror films of the past 25 years but a group of producers led by Courtney Solomon decided to take a stab at relaunching the franchise by paying homage to the original film but not attempting to tell a prequel or sequel attached Bryan Bertino’s original work.
Instead, the idea became a re-imagining that would flesh out a bigger universe for “The Strangers” across three films with the first sharing a lot of DNA with the original movie. A whopping 290 page script was developed and legendary director Renny Harlin was hired to lead the project with “Riverdale” star Madelaine Petsch stepping in as both an actor and a producer.
The story was chopped into three parts for a trio of film telling a complete story that only takes place over five days. The films were shot simultaneously over 52 days in Slovakia with plans to release all three by early 2025.
The first installment follows a young couple traveling cross country to begin a new life in the Pacific northwest but along the way, their car breaks down and the end up staying in an isolated Air BNB in rural Oregon. The young lovers enjoy the peace and tranquility until realizing they’re very much not alone
