“The Last of Us” has already been renewed for season 3 but it appears that might be the final installment in the series …

Are we already preparing for the final season of “The Last of Us”?

The popular and award winning show from HBO based on video games of the same name was already renewed for season 3 but now it seems possible that is going to be the final installment for the series. While nothing is set in stone, HBO’s chairman and CEO Casey Bloys hinted that “The Last of Us” is likely coming to an end with season 3 but the final decision is left up to showrunner Craig Mazin.

“It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners,” Bloys told Deadline about “The Last of Us” and “Hacks” entering into a final season. “So you can ask them.”

Based on the pacing of the show and the storylines that unfolded, it appeared that “The Last of Us” would likely conclude with season 4 but perhaps those plans have changed.

The news comes after original creator Neil Druckmann, who is responsible for both of “The Last of Us” video games, stepped away from the show after the end of season 2. While he stated that his decision was centered around putting more time into his game company Naughty Dog and upcoming releases, there was obviously speculation that perhaps creative differences also played a part in his exit.

When “The Last of Us” season 3 was first announced, the plan was to center many of the episodes around Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby, who served as the primary antagonist in season 2, but the show was supposed to offer a point of view through her eyes about the Cordiceps infection that ravaged the world.

It’s unclear of those plans have changed and perhaps now “The Last of Us” season 3 offers a brief look at the world through Abby’s eyes but then shifts the narrative back to Ellie seeking vengeance after Abby killed Joel at the start of season 2.

Stay tuned for more information about “The Last of Us” season 3 as it becomes available!
