“The Conjuring” isn’t done yet because a prequel film centered around Ed and Lorraine Warren is already in the works …
“The Conjuring” universe was supposedly ending with the latest film “The Conjuring: Last Rites” but earning more than $490 million at the box office can definitely change a few minds.
That’s exactly what has happened with “The Conjuring” prequel already in the works at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros, which once again brings to life famed demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to investigate another case.
Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote “The Nun II” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites” as well as cult classic horror film “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” are on board to pen the script for the latest film in “The Conjuring” universe.
Rodrigue Huart is reportedly in talks to direct the prequel in his feature film debut.
There’s no word yet if original series stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga could return, perhaps in some sort of storytelling role to set up the prequel with new actors taking on the roles, but anything seems possible. Both actors effectively said goodbye to the series after filming wrapped on “The Conjuring: Last Rites” but the prequel film and a hefty payday could convince them otherwise.
That said, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” already set up a potential prequel with Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor portraying a young Ed and Lorraine Warren during the cold open that saw them engaging with a dangerous entity just as their daughter Judy was being welcomed to the world.
While “The Conjuring” prequel is in the works, there’s also a TV series in development at HBO Max as well that is also expected to carry on the legacy of the franchise. Rumors swirled that perhaps that show would feature Ed and Lorraine’s daughter Judy (played in “The Conjuring: Last Rites” by Mia Tomlinson) and her husband Tony (Ben Hardy) carrying on the family’s legacy.
That might still happen but for now plans are moving forward on “The Conjuring” prequel as the long running series continues moving forward!
