Upstart filmmaker Curry Barker, who is about to release his new film “Obsession” in May, is now taking over as director for the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reimagining….

Filmmaker Curry Barker — who first came to prominence for his low budget YouTube film “Milk & Serial” with his next movie “Obsession” set for release in May — has landed the directing gig for the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” film from A24.
The new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is being described as a reimagining rather than a reboot or direct sequel to any of the original films, which feature varying degrees of canon throughout the franchise’s long history. Of course the original film from director Tobe Hooper is considered an all-time horror classic but many of the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” sequel fell well short of the first film from 1974.
There’s no word yet on what kind of story will take place in the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” but this has become a very important project for A24 after the indie studio won a bidding war for the rights to the IP with a TV show also in development with “Strange Darling” filmmaker JT Mollner overseeing that project currently.
Barker’s rise to fame has been swift after his second feature film “Obsession” ended up causing a bidding war after first debuting with Focus Features eventually earning the rights after paying $14 million for the movie. “Obsession” follows a man who gets his wish that a woman he wants falls madly in love with him but that comes with disastrous and deadly consequences.
“Obsession” is set for a wide release on May 15 after playing in numerous film festivals.
Next up for Barker is the film “Anything But Ghosts” for Blumhouse, which he is directing after co-writing the script about a pair of fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face their many mistakes when the run into some real ghosts during one of their schemes.
After that, Barker will shift gears into the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ film. There’s no word yet on who’s writing the script but this is obviously a big project for A24 and now Barker takes the reins as director.
