Despite rumors that Ryan Coogler was working on a sequel to “Sinners,” the director behind the biggest horror film of 2025 says he never intended on telling more than this one story…
If you’re holding out hope for a “Sinners” sequel, you might want to just enjoy the original because that’s all you’re going to get.
Rumors started swirling recently that Warner Bros. and director Ryan Coogler were in the early stages of planning for a followup to the smash hit vampire film that’s earned more than $350 million worldwide but it turns out that was never the plan. In fact, Coogler specifically made “Sinners” as a complete story because he wanted to get away from the franchise model after working on “The Black Panther” films for Marvel and the “Creed” movies, which exist in the larger “Rocky” ecosystem.
“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” Coogler explained to Ebony. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.
“I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”
Coogler said in numerous interviews leading up to “Sinners” release that this was his most personal film to date and it’s also his first truly original movie after adapting pre-existing material for all of his other films.
“Sinners” took elements from Coogler’s own family history and he even injected characters that felt familiar to him after growing up around relatives that lived around the same era as when this film takes place.
The plan paid off with “Sinners” becoming one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films thus far in 2025.
So as much as Warner Bros. would probably start frothing at the mouth for the chance to see a “Sinners” sequel, Coogler obviously isn’t interested and since maintaining control over this story was a huge part of whatever studio made this movie, he’s not planning to return for another movie set in this same universe.
So enjoy “Sinners” as a complete story — and the film is even available now for purchase at home!
