In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to grab our tire iron and read up on our mythology as we review the 2025 horror-comedy “Death of a Unicorn”…

It was a decade ago when writer and director Alex Scharfman first came up with an idea about a father and daughter driving along an isolated road in the middle of nowhere when a banal conversation gets interrupted when they collide with a unicorn.

Yes, the mythical creature with a horn jutting from its head.

Scharfman wasn’t sure exactly what to do with that idea so initially he thought maybe it would become a short film but he didn’t really want to make a short film.

That’s when Scharfman started doing research into unicorns — a history of the mythology with the creatures, the symbolism they’ve represented throughout the years and he event happened upon The Unicorn Tapestries, which where a series of seven tapestries from the Netherlands that were created somewhere between 1495 and 1505.

Once Scharfman fell down that rabbit hole and the stories behind The Unicorn Tapestries, he finally had the earliest version of what would become a feature film.

The movie follows a father and daughter traveling to an isolated retreat when their car actually hits a baby unicorn. But when the father’s boss — a pharmaceutical company magnate — discovers the healing properties hidden inside this mythical creature, a terrible mistake is transformed into a moneymaking opportunity until the unicorn’s parents coming looking for it….
