The sale of 20th Century FOX to Disney slowed down, stopped or changed a number of plans in the works for various franchises but “Alien” was one that was almost immediately revived with plans to carry on a saga that struggled in the wake of two prequels from director Ridley Scott and a pair of crossover films with the “Predator” universe.
After creating his own spin on an “Evil Dead” reboot along with rave reviews for his home invasion horror film “Don’t Breathe,” director Fede Alvarez had an idea for an “Alien” film that would take the franchise back to its roots based on the original two movies from Scott and James Cameron.
He pitched his idea to Scott and essentially asked for his blessing to make the film and it wasn’t long before Alvarez got the green light from Disney to move forward with the project.
When developing the story, Alvarez wanted to create a standalone film that wouldn’t change the mythology from the original movies but at the same time he wanted to find some connective tissue that would tie the entire universe together.
What resulted was a story that takes place 20 years after the original “Alien” and 37 years before Ellen Ripley gets found floating in space leading to the events in “Aliens.”
The common thread was the that in space no one can hear you scream … even when a xenomorph is bursting through your chest…
