It all started with a script from Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett for a film originally called “Star Beast” that was set up as a low-budget science fiction horror movie.
Thanks to the success of “Star Wars,” FOX decided to invest millions in the film that was retitled “Alien” with Ridley Scott hired as a director. An unknown young actor named Sigourney Weaver was cast in the lead role after she had only done theater and a few TV spots before she was cast.
The film ended up as a massive success and four years later, FOX started looking into a potential sequel with James Cameron being hired to develop a story to continue the franchise after he became a household name thanks to “The Terminator” being released in 1984.
Another long gap of time followed before a third film was produced but it was evident by the 1990s that this was going to be the kind of franchise that would continue spinning out sequels for years to come.
A total of nine films have been produced in the “Alien” universe with video games, books and comic books also spinning off with the latest movie “Alien: Romulus” being released in 2024 with the first ever TV series titled “Alien: Earth” due out in 2025….
