Oscar winner Mikey Madison might be returning to her horror roots with a role in the upcoming adaptation of “Masque of the Red Death” from A24…
Oscar winner Mikey Madison — fresh off her victory for a standout performance in the movie “Anora” — is circling a leading role in the upcoming adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe short story “Masque of the Red Death” with A24 already on board for the project.
Sydney Sweeney was originally attached to star in the film but scheduling conflicts forced her to drop off and A24 might just land an Academy Award winner as her replacement.
The adaptation of the classic Poe tale is coming from filmmaker Charlie Polinger and it’s described as a “wildly revisionist” take on the original short story.
Madison would play twin sisters in a world where a mad prince (Prince Prospero in the original story) welcomes wealthy elites into his castle as plague spreads across the land. The long-lost twin, who lives among the lower class, enters the castle in what is an atmosphere of drugs, sex, orgies and general debauchery as the prince throws a masquerade ball in seven rooms, each decorated with a different color. In the original short, a mysterious figure enters the castle disguised as a Red Death victim and Prospero ultimately dies after confronting the stranger, along with many other guests.
The film is described as the ultimate A24 project and that might be exactly what’s attracting Madison, who has been very selective in her choices for roles after her Oscar winning part in “Anora.”
Of course, Madison is no stranger to horror after she starred in the fifth “Scream” film and also made a memorable appearance as a member of the Manson family in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.”
Current plans are for “Masque of the Red Death” to begin shooting in late 2024 or early 2025 and landing Madison in one of her first major roles after the Oscars would be a huge addition to the project.
