Fresh off the success of his remake of “Nosferatu,” Robert Eggers is taking on another classic horror genre with a werewolf movie set in the 13th century…
Robert Eggers has tackled witches, vampires and vikings and now he’s ready to make his own take on a werewolf film.
The prolific writer and director behind the smash hit “Nosferatu” has already set up his next project with Focus Features producing as he takes a stab at a 13th century horror film titled “Werwulf.”
Eggers wrote the script for “Werwulf” alongsize Sjón, who also co-wrote the Viking saga “The Northman,” and now they’re teaming up together again for this latest project. The film is expected to be released on Christmas Day, 2026 following the success that “Nosferatu” found with the same release date in 2024.
Details on the story haven’t been revealed but Eggers is expected to set “Werwulf” in the 13th century and use dialogue true to that time period including “translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.”
Eggers reportedly planned to shoot “Werwulf” in black and white but he’s no longer expected to do that with production on the film expected to start later this year.
“Werwulf” serves as Eggers’ fifth feature film after he’s found critical and commercial success with all of his previous projects including “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman” before “Nosferatu” became his highest grossing movie of all time after earning more than $156 million at the box office.
There’s no news on casting for “Werwulf” yet but Eggers has traditionally enjoyed working with some of the same actors throughout his career including Anya Taylor-Joy, who was originally expected to star in “Nosferatu” before scheduling conflicts prevented that from happening. Willem Dafoe has also been a favorite choice for Eggers after appearing in all of his films outside of “The Witch.”
Stay tuned for more details on Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf” as it becomes available.
