Mike Flanagan is staying at Amazon MGM after inking a new exclusive multi-year deal with the studio, which officially starts with the launch of his new “Carrie” adaptation due out in October.
Recognized as one of the well liked and well respected creators in horror, Flanagan came to prominence after he started developing TV series for Netflix, which included the massively successful show “The Haunting of Hill House” and then followed up by the next series “The Haunting of Bly Manor.” Flanagan’s success at Netflix continued with series such as “Midnight Mass” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” but his relationship with the streamer seemingly soured after his series “The Midnight Club” didn’t get as much support on the promotion side when it first launched.
The show was subsequently canceled after one season.
Now Flanagan is moving his future TV productions to Amazon MGM after already developing his “Carrie” reboot, which he made as a TV series after the original Stephen King story had been adapted into several films in the past. The new “Carrie” series is a modern reboot of the classic horror story with Flanagan serving as showrunner.
Of course, Flanagan is also very busy with his film work as well with his upcoming reboot of “The Exorcist” franchise, which is being produced by Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. He’s also working on another collaboration with Stephen King by creating a new film version of his classic novella “The Mist.”
Flanagan is a massive fan of King and his work, which is why he’s adapted numerous stories and books in the past including “Gerald’s Game,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Life of Chuck.” It’s also been a lifelong dream for Flanagan to develop a TV series based on King’s sprawling epic “The Dark Tower” series and that remains a passion project that would happen at Amazon now under terms of his new deal.
