Brendan Fraser comments on “The Mummy 4” rumors with talks that he’s returning to the franchise alongside Rachel Weisz….

Brendan Fraser can’t say much about the rumors surrounding “The Mummy 4” — a continuation of the popular franchise that first launched back in 1999 — but it’s safe to say he’s excited.

News broke in early November that Fraser and co-star Rachel Weisz were both expected to return for a new sequel to “The Mummy” that would effectively carry on the story from the first two films but ignore the events in the third movie. That film “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” was undoubtedly the least popular in the franchise with Maria Bello stepping into the lead role replacing Weisz, who chose not to return for the sequel.

Now Radio Silence — the team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who made the horror-comedy “Ready or Not” as well as the recent sequels “Scream 5” and “Scream 6” — are set to direct the new movie with both Fraser and Weisz reportedly on board to reprise their famous roles.

“The one I wanted to make was never made,” Fraser told the Associated Press about his hopes for a proper sequel to “The Mummy Returns.” “The third one was a model of … how can I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and we went to China. Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience.

“I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot.”

That said, Fraser admitted that everything he’s always wanted for another film in “The Mummy” franchise is apparently coming together for this fourth sequel.

“The one I wanted to make is forthcoming,” Fraser teased. “And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”

Fraser was always open to returning to “The Mummy” franchise — even after he claimed his Academy Award for Best Actor in “The Whale,” which served as his return to the spotlight after he had largely walked away from acting for several years.

Now as he’s promoting his new film “Rental Family,” Fraser has understandably been bombarded with questions about returning to “The Mummy” and it appears everything is moving ahead as scheduled.
