The original director behind “Speak No Evil,” a 2022 film from Denmark, gives his thoughts on Blumhouse making a remake just two years after his movie was released…

Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood but it was a little odd that Blumhouse announced plans to remake the Danish film “Speak No Evil” just a year after the original film was released.

Hardcore horror fans who experienced “Speak No Evil” understood the demented genius from writer and director Christian Tafdrup about a pair of families who meet on vacation and end up together for another getaway that results in a horrifying conclusion. In fact, “Speak No Evil” might deliver one of the most brutal endings in recent film history.

The decision to remake the English language film so quickly was somewhat confusing but it turns out Tafdrup was on board with the idea after Blumhouse reached out to him with the idea.

“Blumhouse called me after my film premiered and wanted to do a remake,” Tafdrup revealed in a new feature for the upcoming remake. “I’m very happy that James [Watkins] directed a take on our story.

“He’s just a great director and he also has a flare for uncomfortable situations, which I also like. That’s the purpose of a remake.:”

Tafdrup also explained the origin behind the horror story that unfolds in “Speak No Evil,” which was inspired by a vacation encounter he had alongside his family.

“I had an experience with my own family where we met a Dutch family and they invited us to visit them,” Tafdrup said. “We did not say yes but I just started imagining what would have happened and I thought it could be a pretty scary film.”

Just judging by the trailers, the “Speak No Evil” remake definitely differs from the original film in many ways, especially with the revelation that the family led by Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis are in deadly peril after encountering another couple played by the devilishly good James McAvoy and Aisling Franciosi.

McAvoy said as much in the same feature when comparing the original “Speak No Evil” to the upcoming remake due out on September 13.

“It is quite a different film,” McAvoy said. “We took the original and we pushed it as far as we could.”

For now, check out the latest trailer for “Speak No Evil” below and prepare for the film’s release on Sept. 13.
