In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to remember that buildings burn, people die but real love is forever as we review the 1994 film “The Crow”…

Comic book writer James O’Barr initially created what would become his most famous work as a way to cope with the tragic death of his fiancée after she was hit and killed by drunk driver.

It wasn’t long before screenwriter John Shirley took notice and wanted to adapt the comic into a feature film. Shirley, O’Barr and producer Edward Pressman developed the project with writer David Schow eventually joining to help with rewrites.

When the movie eventually got the greenlight, Australian filmmaker David Proyas was hired to direct and Brandon Lee, the son of famed martial arts and Hollywood legend Bruce Lee, was hired in the lead role. Filming took place in North Carolina with a 54-day shooting schedule. In one of the final days of production, Lee was starring in one of his last scenes — a flashback where he walks into his apartment and finds a gang of thugs attacking his fiancée.

One of the thugs, played by actor Michael Massee, fires a gun at him but the stunt went horribly wrong after shrapnel from a previous gunshot got lodged in the barrel and actually hit Lee directly in the abdomen.

Hours later, Lee was dead. It was only after Lee’s family urged the filmmakers to finish the project did Proyas return with the cast and crew and future “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski stepping in as Lee’s stunt double to finish his final scenes.

What resulted was Lee’s greatest work in a film that carries his legacy even to this day….
