Valentine’s Day will never be the same again.
Well that’s if Blumhouse has anything to say about it because the famed horror studio is reportedly developing a new “My Bloody Valentine” film after the original slasher classic was released all the way back in 1981. There was also a rematch — “My Bloody Valentine 3D” released in 2009 — but there hasn’t been another film in the series since.
Bloody Disgusting first reported the news with Blumhouse currently in the early stages of development ont eh project.
The original “My Bloody Valentine” directed by George Mihalka and written by John Beaird was a Canadian horror film that took place in the fictional town of Valentine Bluffs where people start getting picked off one by one by a killer dressed in a full mining outfit. Here’s the official synopsis for that film:
On Valentine’s Day, someone always loses their heart. Twenty years ago, this small town lost more than that. When supervisors abandoned their posts to attend the town’s annual holiday dance, a tragedy claimed the lives of five miners. The sole survivor, Harry Warden, was institutionalized, but returned for a vengeful massacre on the disaster’s first anniversary. Nineteen years later, the town is gearing up for another Valentine’s Day party. Teen sweethearts T.J. and Sarah, along with their friend Axel, are among the excited partygoers. But when a box of candy containing an eerie warning and blood-soaked heart arrive, the townsfolk realize that romance is as good as dead. And so are they ..
While the film only earned $5.7 million at the box office, “My Bloody Valentine” eventually developed a cult following with the film maintaining a strong fanbase reminiscing about the glory days of the slasher film.
A remake was released in 2009 starring “Supernatural” favorite Jensen Ackles with the movie actually making more than $100 million at the box office on a small $14 million budget but reviews for the movie were not great. Despite the financial success behind the remake, there was never really any talk about making a sequel or carrying on the franchise beyond the lone movie.
Now it appears Blumhouse is ready to resurrect another horror series after previously working on films like “Halloween” and “The Exorcist: Believer.”
